Departure Prep

Valerie and I traveled to San Diego four days early. We toured around the area with long-time friends and enjoyed a rental convertible. I got out for a 16 mile “tune-up” ride. I followed the first 8 miles (round-trip) of the beginning course. Most of it was a bike path that followed the San Diego River and went under the big freeways. The total “climb” for that 8 miles was 160 feet. However, the total climb for the actual first day is 5,300 feet. So, that indicates the remainder of the day will be a significant grind.

We have had a great time in the San Diego area. The Ocean Beach Hotel is a quaint, small Inn across the street from where we will put our rear tires in the Pacific. Valerie will airline home tomorrow, and meet me again in Fredericksburg, TX.

Now, the rest of the riders are arriving and getting their bikes set up. We will have an orientation meeting this afternoon and a dinner tonight at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse Restaurant.

Tomorrow is the day!
